Youth Voices from Kern County

Radio Bilingüe offered in early 2017 basic radio production workshops in Lamont, California, a small rural community in South Kern County. During this hands-on training youth produced a series of five short messages and two longer features on issues including the positive effects of Affordable Care Act in Kern County; the expectation of having a community college campus in Arvin; student concerns about a new policy that allows teachers and high school staff to have a concealed weapon while at work and Know your Rights advice for county immigrant residents. All messages are being broadcast on Radio Bilingüe Network, which includes two stations that serve Kern County: KQTX 90.1 FM and KSJV 91.5 FM.

This project was completed in collaboration with South Kern Sol, a youth-led publication and a partner in Building Healthy Communities South Kern, an initiative sponsored by The California Endowment.
