A New Covid-19 Vaccine.
As the Omicron variant surges to record-level COVID-19 infections in the U.S. and the world, scientists in Texas developed a new vaccine. Called CORBEVAX, the new vaccine has received emergency approval in India and other underserved countries have shown interest. The vaccine is announced as more accessible for poor countries. The co-leader of the lab team discusses the long process to develop the new vaccine, the clinical studies to ensure safety and effectiveness and her hopes to make it a global vaccine, because of its low cost and little restrictions. She also comments on new CDC guidelines, cutting the recommended times that people should isolate when they’ve tested positive from ten to five days if they don’t have symptoms.
Guest: Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, Co-Director, Texas Children’s Center for Vaccine Development; Professor and Associate Dean, National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX.
Covid and Health Insurance. Public health officials in California encourage people to make being healthy and having health insurance a resolution for 2022. Those enrolling in a health plan with Covered California may qualify for financial aid to help them defray the costs of a health plan. The call is especially relevant for Latinos, since more than 2 million Latinos have been infected with the virus.
Guest: Patricia Izquierdo, Spokesperson, Covered California, Sacramento, CA.
