Latina Teen Suicides.
Suicide rates continue to rise among Latina teenage girls, who have the highest rate of suicide attempts in the US. A psychologist talks about the cultural factors in Latino families that fuel feelings of anxiety and depression among Latina teens and reports on an innovative counseling program she created to help young Latinas in New York, an area heavily hit by the suicide epidemic among Latina teens. Also, legislators in California and Washington ask for more money to help pay suicide prevention strategies, including paying for better crisis hotlines, and requiring counties to work on suicide-prevention plans for youth.

Reinstating the Violence Against Women Act. Leaders of the US House introduced a bill to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a landmark legislation to protect survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault whose money expired last month. The new bill provides more resources to help children and teens, train health care workers, prevent harassment in the workplace, and keep guns away from domestic abusers.

California Halts Executions. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order a few minutes ago, imposing a moratorium on the death penalty. According to Newsom, the death penalty system is a failure because it is discriminatory, it provides no public safety benefit, and it wastes billions of dollars.
