Healing Farm Worker Trauma.
The nearly 3 million mostly Latino farmworkers in this country have experienced decades of traumatic working conditions, economic insecurity and vulnerability, all of which has worsened in the last year by COVID-19. A first-of-its-kind mental health initiative called ‘Healing Voices’ aims to address mental health and safety issues in the workplace for farmworkers, and support the healing of this community by organizing support groups and with the help of technology and tradition.

Preparing for the Next Public Health Crisis. As the pandemic raged through California for the past year, Latinos died in disproportionate numbers due to structural inequalities such as lack of bilingual physicians, greater exposure to the virus in the workplace, crowded housing, and lack of health insurance. Researchers warn that if these structural inequalities are not remedied, the next pandemic will have the same tragic outcome for Latinos and other populations that supply so many essential workers to the state’s economy.
