Senate Parliamentarian Rules Against Immigration Reform Draft.

The Senate Parliamentarian ruled last night that Democrats cannot include immigration reform into their budget reconciliation package because the policy change does not belong in a strictly fiscal matter. The news is a major setback to the Biden administration, Congressional Democrats, and immigrant advocates who were vying for legal permanent status for 8 million immigrants, including DACA and TPS recipients, farmworkers, and essential workers. Democrats are now working against the clock to come up with alternative plans.

Guest: Jose Lopez Zamorano, Reporter, Washington, DC.

Emergency Order to Block Texas Abortion Ban Sought.

The US Justice Department asked a judge to issue a temporary restraining order that would prevent Texas from enacting a law that prohibits nearly all abortions. Abortion providers across the state have been forced to suspend services for fear of frivolous lawsuits. The emergency motion is to prevent people from suing abortion providers, funders and advocates to enforce the six-week abortion ban while litigation of the case continues. An advocate applauds the federal intervention, talks about the chilling effect among women around the state, and gives her perpective on what’s at stake.

Guest: Alejandra Soto, Director, Latino Media & Communications, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Planned Parenthood Votes, New York, NY.

Latino Leaders Tackle Pandemic.

As Covid cases continue to rise in Latino communities around the country, community leaders step up their efforts to warn about the risks for the unvaccinated. A civil rights leader talks about the impact of full ICUs on impacted communities, President Biden’s plan to require vaccination for millions, the message from the recent election in California on Covid safety and against anti-democracy conspiracy theorists, and the pushback from states like Texas and Florida.

Guest: Sindy Benavides, Chief Executive Officer, LULAC, Washington, DC.

Los Angeles Student Vaccines Mandate.

Los Angeles County school officials ordered vaccinations for all students 12 years and over. Three of four students in this school district, the second largest in the US, are Latinos. How alarming is the surge of Covid-19 cases among kids? What developments led Los Angeles to this decision? What should parents know about vaccinating their kids?

Guest: Dr. Ilan Shapiro, Pediatrician, AltaMed Health Services, Los Angeles, CA
