Monday_673x324MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
PROGRAM # 8163 12:00 PM PST.

New Obamacare Repeal.

Republicans are staging a last-ditch push to pass a bill to repeal Obamacare with a simple majority. With a united Democratic opposition and two Republicans against it, the bill has slim chances, but the debate is rising in tone. Analysts comment on the enormous impact this bill would have on Latinos, who rely on Medicaid for basic health care needs, and on California, a state that has heavily invested on Medi-Cal and on the insurance exchange market.

Guests: Alejandra Gepp, Associate Director, Unidos US, Institute of Hispanic Health, Washington, DC; Melissa Hurtado, Central Valley Organizer, Health Access California, Sanger, CA

Mexico and Puerto Rico After the Natural Disasters. Mexico and Puerto Rico have been hit by devastating earthquakes and hurricanes. An analyst comments on the impact of these catastrophic disasters on infrastructure, forests and agriculture, the extraordinary display of civil solidarity, and the challenges to receive the fair share of funds for recovery and reconstruction.

Guest: Ivette Perfecto, George W. Pack Professor of Natural Resources, School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI

Colorado River Protector. Decades before the current fight in Standing Rock to protect the waters of the Missouri River from oil contamination, there was the less known battle of the Chemehuevi Tribe to protect the Colorado River from toxic waste. At the center of that epic battle was veteran local activist Alfredo Figueroa. Remembering the fights against the toxic waste dumps, Figueroa says his quest to protect the river is connected to his roots as a community-minded activist and his mission to care for the sacred sites of the first peoples in the Great Basin of the Colorado. Valeria Fernández has the story.

Guest: Valeria Fernández, Reporter, Phoenix, AZ.
