Latinos: One Year Under the Pandemic.

After a year of coronavirus in the US, the pandemic has taken the heaviest toll on Latino families and communities in California and other states. Why does it matter that Latinos are dying at higher rates than whites? Hint: check into the rapidly growing Latino GDP. A renowned medical researcher discusses this and also comments on the new emergency orders in response to the third coronavirus wave in California and the nomination of Xavier Becerra to head the nation’s health department.

Guest: David Hayes-Bautista, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, The Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA.

High Alert for Covid-19. As the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hits Los Angeles and record-high numbers of cases and hospitalizations, Mayor Garcetti issued an emergency order to “cancel everything,” and medical experts are urging the public to help prevent the spread of the virus. A public health leader talks about the severe impact of the new outbreak on hospitals, emergency rooms and ICUs and shares her experience as front-line worker during the pandemic. She comments on the new state and local “stay home,” business shutdowns and travel restrictions orders effective today in Southern California and the Central Valley, areas where hospitals are running out of ICU beds capacity. She also comments on citizen fatigue and responds to the skepticism and resistance faced from restaurant groups and other businesses against the new measures.

Guest: Dr. Margarita Pereyda, Interim Chief Medical Information Officer, Office of Los Angeles County DHHS/Correctional Health Services, Los Angeles, CA.
