After a year of coronavirus in the US, the pandemic has taken the heaviest toll on Latino families and communities in California and other states. As the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic hits Los Angeles and record-high numbers of cases and hospitalizations, Mayor Garcetti issued an emergency order to “cancel everything,” and medical experts are urging the public to help prevent the spread of the virus. A public health leader talks about the severe impact of the new outbreak on hospitals, emergency rooms and ICUs and shares her experience as front-line worker during the pandemic. She comments on the new state and local “stay home,” business shutdowns and travel restrictions orders effective today in Southern California and the Central Valley, areas where hospitals are running out of ICU beds capacity. She also comments on citizen fatigue and responds to the skepticism and resistance faced from restaurant groups and other businesses against the new measures.
