WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4
PROGRAM # 9338 12:00 PM PDT
Opioid Crisis, Voting Rights, and Biden’s Meeting with Latinos.
Major drug companies agreed to pay billions of dollars in a settlement to resolve opioid lawsuits. The companies are accused of playing a key role in the massive distribution of opioid painkillers to communities around the US, which led to an addiction crisis and hundreds of thousands of overdose deaths. An expert also comments on the rise of opioid deaths in the US during the pandemic and its impact across Latino communities. On another story, more than 100 state legislators from around the nation, many from states that have passed voting-restriction laws, descend on Washington to lend support to Texas state lawmakers in their quest to lobby the US Congress to support legislation to protect voting rights nationwide. A state lawmaker from Arizona joins this program. Finally, on the second anniversary of the massacre of 23 people in El Paso, President Biden and Vice President Harris meet with Latino leaders to discuss the infrastructure bill, the response to the Covid pandemic, immigration reform, and voting rights legislation, among other issues. One of the participants in the White House meeting reports on the outcome.
Guests: Armando Gudiño, Policy Director, Drug Policy Alliance, Los Angeles, CA; Rep. Cesar Chavez, Arizona State Representative, Vice President for Membership, National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, Phoenix, AZ; Arturo Vargas, Executive Director, NALEO, Los Ángeles, CA; (Audio Segment) President Joe Biden, The White House, Washington, DC.
