Extra Edition: Heeding the Signs of Prediabetes (Program Repeat.)

People with prediabetes, a health condition in which you have a higher than normal blood sugar level, have a higher risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. But not everyone with prediabetes will go on to get diabetes. It can often be prevented and controlled. People in rural communities are among the most at risk. How can they take care of themselves to prevent the onset and avoid complications? Health educators discuss the ABC of prediabetes, the Do’s and Don’ts, the ways to make healthy lifestyle changes, and the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Listeners called in to share comments, including one deploring how immigrants from Mexico’s countryside become obese after acculturating and losing their traditional diet, another one advising healthy eating and exercise to ensure quality of life during the elder years, and another one wondering how to eat healthy when you are too busy to cook.

Guests: Vicky Reyes Acosta, Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Care and Educator Specialist, Center for Healthy Living, Memorial Hospital, Bakersfield, CA; Oliva Hernández Maruri, Health Educator, Seamar Monroe Clinic, Yakima, WA.
