PROGRAM # 9546 12:00 PM PT
Abortion Rights.
Senate leaders scheduled a vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) that codifies abortion rights into law. Democrats are pushing to protect abortion rights before the Supreme Court potentially overturns Roe v. Wade. It would supersede state-level restrictions on abortion and expressly prohibits any measure that “impedes access to abortion.” On other news: after the Texas abortion ban, health centers in neighboring Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado and Missouri saw an 800% increase in patients from Texas compared to last year. Finally, in a ruling described as a historic event by women’s rights groups, women in Colombia will be able to get abortions until the 24th week of their pregnancy after the nation’s highest court voted to legalize the procedure. A civil rights advocate also comments on the historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black women nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, hailing her qualifications and applauding her track record in areas like voting rights, labor issues and immigration.
