Of Fair Schools, Safe Walking.
A group of Spanish-speaking mothers in Bakersfield, one of the most polluted cities in the country, got together, began exercising in a walking group and, with the years, they not only changed themselves, but the entire neighborhood. On other topic, after settling a lawsuit over discriminatory discipline practices against Black and Latino students, high school authorities of Kern County are holding their first special meeting with the community to report on progress and hear concerns from parents. A group of outside experts is already working with the authorities to help Kern combat racial bias.
Guests: Gema Perez, Founder and Member, Greenfield Walking Group, Bakersfield, CA; Camila Chavez, Executive Director, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Bakersfield, CA
Deals on DACA and State Sanctuary. A social scholar and activist examines the announcement of a deal on DACA and the young Dreamers between leading Democrats and Trump, and the role the influential Central Valley Republican delegation to Congress is playing on stalling or moving forward immigration reform legislation. He also comments on the attitude by a local state legislator and the local government who, despite a deal reached between law enforcement leaders and Gov. Brown, remain uncommitted to any support to a popular state sanctuary bill.
Guest: Dr. Gonzalo Santos, Associate Professor Emeritus of Sociology, CSU Bakersfield, Bakersfield, CA.
