PROGRAM # 8419 12:00 PM PT
Apology for Forced Sterilizations.
Los Angeles County apologized for forcing more than 200 women to be sterilized between 1968 and 1974. This practice started in 1909, when state clinics were guided by a eugenics law to prevent “unfit” people, like Latinas, the poor and the disabled, from having babies. This program includes an interview with the co-author of the county apology, a leading advocate for the survivors, and a survivor. This program includes comments on Los Angeles County’s green light to the breaking of the ground on the Healthy Village, a restorative care village that’s announced as the first big center in the country that combines health care, restorative and housing services for the homeless and the mentally ill.
Guests: Hilda Solís, Supervisor, County of Los Angeles, Co-Author of Apology Resolution, Los Angeles, CA; Consuelo Hermosillo, Survivor of forced sterilization at County USC medical center, Los Angeles, CA; Susy Chávez Herrera, Communications Director, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice, Los Angeles, CA.
