PROGRAM # 8847 11:00 PM PT

COVID-19: Latest Update.

As the US becomes the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, with cases approaching the 300,000, ten million workers filed new jobless claims in the past two weeks and economists predict the figure could rise to 30 million by the end of April. In this program, we get a report about the devastating effects of the outbreak in New York, the new ground zero, particularly on low-income communities of color. From a community station in Washington, an early COVID-19 hotspot, we get reports that as the state reaches the apex of the coronavirus crisis, the governor announces that he is sharing ventilators with states in most need, and efforts to educate rural communities on the urgency to comply with social distancing orders. Also, Latino members of Congress renew their push to support workers who are on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic; they want personal protective equipment and meet the safety needs to protect health care workers, food service providers, farmworkers and others considered “essential workers.” Finally, the mayor of Miami tells the story about how he became infected with coronavirus, his convalescent experience, how he became a plasma donor after recovery, and the dangers of being a coronavirus patient without symptoms.

Guests: Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, Washington, DC; Marco Vinicio Gonzalez, Correspondent, New York, NY; Francisco Ríos, News Director, KDNA, Granger, WA; Francis Suárez, Miami Mayor, Coronavirus Survivor, Miami, FL.
