MONDAY, MARCH 23
PROGRAM # 8836 11:00 AM PT
Coronavirus: Special Edition.
Facing the threat of millions of people infected by the coronavirus and at the request of Governor Newsom, California was declared a major disaster area by the federal government. Local officials from California’s central valley join this special coverage to discuss efforts to contain the pandemic and mitigate economic bankruptcy. In Fresno, the government ordered all residents to stay home and tenant evictions and home foreclosures were banned, requiring leases to be extended up to six months after the emergency. And through a task force called “The Essentials,” a school government continues to distribute food and school learning packages to its students. On other news, California makes it easier to enroll in Covered CA, apply for Medi-Cal and gives free tests of COVID-19; the governor orders the deployment of the National Guard to help food banks distribute meals; authorities assure that there is no risk of contracting the coronavirus through drinking water; utility companies promise not to cut the power for those who fail to pay due to the coronavirus; and officials warn against unscrupulous businesses who engage in price gouging in times of emergency. These and other news are discussed.
Guests: Esmeralda Soria, Councilmember, City of Fresno, Fresno, CA; Juan Sandoval, Superintendent, Raisin City School District, Raisin City, CA.
