PROGRAM # 8675 12:00 PM PT
Living in Fear.
On the heels of the El Paso massacre, Latinos around the country are in a state of alert and anxiety, fearing to be the next target. A new poll by the largest organization of psychologists shows that a large majority of adults are under constant stress just thinking about mass shootings and many can not go anywhere without worrying of being victim of a terror act. This toxic fear is already impacting the daily routine of many in the US, which is the effect the terrorists wanted to create, says a source. What’s the toll of mass shootings on our health? What can political leaders do? Listeners are encouraged to share their testimonies.
Guest: Dr. Jaime Diaz-Granados, Psychologist, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, American Psychology Association, Washington, DC.
Tracking Hate Ads. The Trump campaign has spent millions on online ads raising alarm about the Hispanic migrant “invasion.” A white supremacist terrorist killed 22 people in El Paso, announcing his attack was a response to the “Hispanic invasion.” Warning that the words of ads have consequences, including racial violence, a group has set up a website to track xenophobic and racist ads that candidates and campaigns are running this election season, and give voters context information about those attacks.
Guest: Juana Esquivel, Digitial Communications Manager, America’s Voice, Los Angeles, CA
Redistricting Commission: Final Deadline. Californians have only a few hours to apply to serve in the Citizens Redistricting Commission, the independent body that will draw the new political lines after the 2020 census. While more than 20,000 have applied, Latinos are lagging far behind, and the deadline was extended to ensure a more diverse and representative commission.
Guest: Margarita Fernández, Chief of Public Affairs, California State Auditor, Sacramento, CA.
