After the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in June, Texas and other states across the South moved ahead with laws that opponents say will make it harder for minorities to vote. The U.S. Department of Justice recently sued Texas over its new law requiring voters to show photo identification. Meanwhile, California is approving new rights and protections for voters in the state.
