PROGRAM # 8502 12:00 PM PT
Fines and Fees Reform.
Alameda became the second county in the nation to eliminate fees in the justice system that penalizes its poorest residents. The fees are for probation supervision, representation by the public defender, participation in a sheriff’s work program, drug testing, court services and others. Those fees impose a heavy financial burden especially on Blacks and Latinos, who because of criminal justice debt fall deeper into poverty, are unable to rebuild their lives, and repeat incarceration. State and local governments are beginning to address these predatory court practices. On other news, Los Angeles is taking steps to stop collecting 90 million in juvenile detention fees debt, and end incarceration of pregnant teen girls. This program is aired in partnership with The Justice Collaborative.
