It has been five weeks since hundreds of California prisoners began a hunger strike to protest prisoners treatment and to end indefinite solitary confinement in California’s prison system. Some hunger strikers have been recently hospitalized. Prison representatives have called the hunger strike a “gang power play.” Assemblyman Tom Ammiano called for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to begin addressing the concerns of hunger strikers. Will conditions in California prisons change?
