Father of Fallen Soldier.
On occasion of Memorial Day, the father of a fallen soldier remembers his son, who died victim of a US cluster bomb during the invasion of Iraq. After his son’s death, the father became a vocal opponent of current US wars. He comments on the military’s over-recruitment of Latinos, the reality of discrimination and deportations Latino immigrants face after returning from the battle front, the growing rates of young veterans committing suicide, and the poor investment in veterans health care.

Quince Power and Voting at Sixteen. An organization of young Latinos in Texas is trying to harness the natural power in Latino traditions to engage Latino voters and build a culture of voting. Through the initiative Quince Power, they are reaching out to thousands of quinceañeras around the state. Also, at the request of student leaders, the governing board of Los Angeles schools passed a resolution to lower the voting age to 16 for school board elections, joining other cities and states in this trend. An organizer of young voters comments on the potential impact of the new voter population.
