MONDAY, JULY 24
PROGRAM # 8116 12:00 PM PST.
Women in Prison, Women in Office.
In a motion that positions her as a leading voice on criminal justice reform, California Sen. Kamala Harris introduced a bill to reform the money bail systems, and, warning that women are the fastest growing segment of the prison population, she is also spearheading legislation to reform the treatment of women in federal prison. On another story, more women are reportedly thinking about running for office after the presidential election, and after feeling energized by current attempts to undo healthcare reforms and deprive women of maternity care and Planned Parenthood services. A new campaign is under way to inspire women, help elect them to office and help create a pipeline to develop new women leaders.
Guests: Dr. Martin Guevara Urbina, Professor of Criminal Justice, Sul Ross State University – Rio Grande College, Author of Books on Latinos and the Criminal Justice System, Alpine, TX; Vanessa Cárdenas, Communications Director, EMILY’s List, Washington, D.C.
