For the U.S., this day marks the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. In Chile, this day marks 40 years since Pinochet’s brutal coup d’état that overthrew the democratically-elected President Salvador Allende. For the U.S., 9/11 brought a state of war that has lasted more than ten years. For Chileans, it meant 17 years of military dictatorship. Top figures who lived both experiences comment on the lessons of those tragedies.
