PROGRAM # 8688 12:00 PM PT
“The Years of Fierro.”
A filmmaker who is premiering a movie on César Fierro, the oldest Mexican prisoner on death row in the US, tells the story of the man who continues awaiting execution after 40 years in a Texas prison. The prosecuting attorney says that if he knew then what he knows now he wouldn’t have proceeded with the trial. It has been revealed that Fierro was forced to incriminate himself through a confession coerced by discredited Mexican police officers. The filmmaker also comments on the situation of 54 Mexican nationals who are on death row in the US in violation of the Vienna Convention.
Guest: Santiago Esteinou, Filmmaker, Producer of the Documentary “The Years of Fierro,” Fresno, CA.
Ending Private Prisons. A leading state legislator talks about two ambitious bills. A bill to close private for-profit prisons in California is moving forward in the state legislature and Gov. Newsom said it is time to “end the outrage that is private prisons.” Another historic bill, which would allow municipalities to create their own public banks in a rebuke to Wall Street big banks, is also making its way through the legislature. He also comments on a news story of the day: the City and County of San Francisco decided to declare the National Rifle Association a domestic terrorist organization for inciting acts of violence and conspiring against laws that seek to prevent the spread of gun violence, and limit business with vendors who have links with the NRA.
Guest: Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, D-Los Angeles, Sacramento, CA.
