The LA Riots: A City in Flames.

Monday_673x324MONDAY, APRIL 24
PROGRAM # 8048 12:00 PM PST.

The LA Riots: A City in Flames.

April 29 marks 25 years since mass violence erupted in South Central Los Angeles following the acquittal of four officers involved in the brutal beating of African American motorist Rodney King. The five-day civil uprising is considered the deadliest of the century. Latino immigrants were the worst hit by the violence and the media coverage. They were unjustly blamed and casted as looters, and they are still feeling the impact of the scapegoating. In this program, an eyewitness reporter shares his memories, a scholar reflects on the heavy price Latinos are still paying for the LA riots, and an advocate talks about the progress Latino and African American groups are making to help rebuild the city.

Guests: Dr. David Hayes Bautista, Professor of Medicine, Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, School of Medicine, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA; Alberto Retana, President, Chief Executive Officer, Community Coalition, Los Angeles, CA; Ruben Tapia, Reporter, Los Angeles, CA.
