Florida’s Former Prisoners Win Right to Vote.

Wednesday_673x324WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21
PROGRAM # 8482 12:00 PM PT

Florida’s Former Prisoners Win Right to Vote.

In the midterm elections, Florida voters approved Amendment 4, restoring voting rights to former prisoners. Only Florida and two other states bar former prisoners from voting even though they have completed their sentences. A disproportionate number of those incarcerated in Florida are minorities. This is the culmination of decades of work by criminal justice reformers. What are the next steps? What does it mean for Florida and what are the national ramifications? A former prisoner and social activist talks about the consequences of living without the right to vote, the dream of her first vote, and the lessons she learned from the campaign work.

Guests: Juan Cartagena, President and General Counsel, LatinoJustice – PRLDEF, New York, NY; Kira Romero-Craft, Managing Attorney, LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Orlando, FL; Yraida Guanipa, Former Prisoner, Campaign Leader for Amendment 4, Founder and President, YG Institute, Miami, FL
