Insurgent Ahead in DA Race. Young public defender Tiffany Caban is declaring victory in the race for District Attorney in Queens. Of Puerto Rican parents and Queer, Caban is an insurgent candidate who took by surprise and is shaking the old political machine with plans to transform the criminal justice system, including decriminalizing sex work and reforming the cash bail bond system.

Republicans Block Cap and Trade Bill. To derail a vote on a bill on climate change, Republican legislators in Oregon walked out of the capitol building, went into hiding and some fled the state. State police was deployed to bring the Republican senators to Salem, as right-wing militias vowed to defend the missing legislators. With this move, Republicans succeeded temporarily in killing the cap and trade bill, while putting at risk the future of a bill to allow undocumented motorists to drive in the state.
