PROGRAM # 9453 12:00 PM PDT

US Longest-Serving Political Prisoner.

A statue of Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist imprisoned for 45 years in the US, has traveled to historic sites that are symbols of indigenous resistance. Peltier is serving two life sentences for the murder of two FBI agents during a shooting on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Native American activists and a former US Attorney General say Peltier is a political prisoner who was convicted with fabricated evidence in a kangaroo court. This program, in coincidence with National Native American Heritage Month, features interviews with the wife and daughter of Peltier, the artist who created the statue, a curator of the exhibit, and an advocate for Peltier’s release. Also, a founder of the American Indian Movement reflects on the meaning of Thanksgiving Day from a Native American perspective.

Guests: Anne Begay, Wife of Leonard Peltier, Los Angeles, CA; Kathy Peltier, Daughter of Leonard Peltier, Los Angeles, CA; Rigo, Sculptor of Peltier’s Statue, Los Angeles, CA; Dr. Jose Cuellar, Professor Emeritus, Latino Studies, San Francisco State University, Supporter of Free Peltier Campaign, San Francisco, CA; Roberto Martinez, Curator, Richmond Arts Center, Richmond, CA; Bill Means, Founder and Former President, International Indian Treaty Council, Co-Founder, American Indian Movement, San Francisco.
