Decades ago, Texas was the birthplace of the La Raza Unida Party. This movement fueled hopes for the rise of Chicanos and Latinos to public office. In the following decades, Latino numbers have grown fast and Texas has won more seats in the U.S. Congress. Yet, the number of Latinos elected to Congress and other higher offices remains dramatically low. Things may get worse after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act and Texas conservatives are moving ahead with legislation that would make it harder to vote and force a redistricting map that may hurt Latino political representation. How will Latinos in Texas unleash their civic and political power?
Guest: José Ángel Gutiérrez, Civil rights pioneer; Founder of the Raza Unida Party and author of The Making of a Chicano Militant, Dallas, TX.
