PROGRAM # 9578 11:00 AM PT
Extra Edition: César Chávez Holiday (Program Repeat.)
This archival program provides reports on California’s first celebration of Cesar Chavez day after being proclaimed a holiday the previous year. As part of the state’s Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, schools must include instruction on the values of Cesar Chavez and the history of the farm worker movement. This program aired a symphony entitled “César Chávez: Gran Hombre de la Tierra.” Accompanied by Sacramento’s Camelia Symphonic Orchestra, poets Jose Montoya and Olivia Castellano read texts written originally by the late farm worker hero and published later in Jacques Levy’s book “Cesar Chavez: Autobiography of La Causa.” The program includes a historic recording of songs, chants and sounds of the strikers marching in March, 1966 from Delano to Sacramento. It also featured the voice of Luis Valdez reading the Plan of Delano. Finally, Roberto Locatero reports on how children in Porterville, CA, commemorate Chavez’ Day by planting trees.
