Covid-19 and the Census.

Wednesday_673x324(1)WEDNESDAY, MAY 13
PROGRAM # 8883 12:00 PM PT

Covid-19 and the Census.

Citing the disruption caused by the unprecedented pandemic, the Census Bureau has postponed some operations, including door-knocking, for weeks, and urged Congress to postpone completion until April of next year. Faced with low response rates and the risk of an undercount in hard-to-count neighborhoods, activists are redoubling efforts through phone banks and text messages to get immigrants and low-wage families to respond online. Data from the Census helps determine funds for Medicare and Medicaid, Head Start, the National School Lunch Program, and response to disasters and public health emergency planning. Analysts also comment on the impact that the postponement of the census may have on the plans to redraw districts, and on the economic relief package in the House, which includes more funding and more time for the Census count.

Guests: Maria Olmedo-Malagón, Program Director, 2020 Census Communications Campaign, US Census Bureau, Washington, D.C.; Rosemary Soto, Management Analyst, Monterey County Administrative Office, Salinas, CA; Lizette Escobedo, Director of National Census Program, NALEO Education Fund, Los Angeles, CA; Rosa Inguanzo, Census Team Leader, Communities for a New California Education Fund (CNC), Merced, CA
