Democratic National Convention: The Opening.

Democratic delegates and political leaders from all over the nation meet in Philadelphia for a four-day convention to nominate Hillary Clinton as their presidential candidate. Democrats come to Pennsylvania, a battleground state in this election, with the challenge of unifying the party and securing the support of Bernie Sanders’ loyalists after a protracted primary contest. After continuing protests the first night, party unity continues being a challenge. In this convention, a major party for the first time gives official roles to a number of undocumented immigrants. This report on the opening day of the convention includes segments from the speech of Bernie Sanders, DREAMer immigration activist Astrid Silva, and mixed-status family Karla and Francisca Ortiz.

Guests: Pili Tobar, Director of Communications, Latino Victory Fund, Philadelphia, PA; Vanessa Cardenas, Director of Communications, Emily’s List, Philadelphia, PA; José López Zamorano, Correspondent, Philadelphia, PA; Elmy Bermejo, Latina Advisory Council, EMILY’S list, Philadelphia, PA
