PROGRAM # 8141 12:00 PM PST.
2020 Census At Risk.
Civil rights leaders are drawing attention to the current leadership vacuum and lack of adequate funds for the 2020 Census. This season, hard-to-count communities face added challenges, including the current climate of heightened fear among immigrant communities, and still, the Trump administration plans to shortchange and Congress has not approved critical monies, raising new worries about an undercount of minorities.
Guest: Arturo Vargas, Executive Director, National Association of Latino Officials – NALEO, Los Angeles, CA.
A New “Poll Tax”? A federal judge ruled that Texas voter ID law intentionally discriminated against the state’s voters of color, tossing out both the original law and the recent version to fix the racially discriminatory purpose. The judge compared Texas’s law to a “poll tax” on voters of color. While Texas is vowing to appeal, many call on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act.
Guest: Attorney José Garza, General Counsel, Mexican American Legislative Caucus, Lead Attorney for the Plaintiffs, San Antonio, TX.
Arpaio’s Pardon and Hurricane Harvey. President Trump pardoned former Sheriff Joe Arpaio, convicted of criminal contempt of court, sparking widespread condemnation from civil rights groups and political leaders, who called this action a “presidential endorsement of racism.” At the same time, Hurricane Harvey hits Houston, Corpus Christi and other communities in Texas, causing catastrophic damage. While emergency authorities have been overwhelmed by the disaster, community volunteers have stepped in to help in rescue operations.
