Crucial Texas Redistricting Case.
The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a Texas redistricting case that has been litigated for almost a decade. Civil rights attorneys accuse Republican legislators in Texas of intentionally discriminating against minority voters when they designed the political maps for the state House and congressional offices. Texas took the matter straight to the US Supreme Court on a fast-track basis. The lawyers of the Latino plaintiffs ask the judges to let the lower court to finish their work. Latino Voters Push for Representation. In California’s Central Valley, voting rights advocates are preparing to sue Tulare County if local officials refuse to redraw the boundaries of voting districts to include more Latino voters. Latinos are more than half of the voting population, and yet there is no Latino serving on the highest elected office of the county. Guest commentators discuss the poor response from county officials, a similar case in neighboring Kern County where voters and officials reached a settlement, and the plans in Tulare County to oppose Calfornia’s Sanctuary Law.
