California Halts Death Penalty.

Monday_673x324MONDAY, MARCH 18
PROGRAM # 8565 12:00 PM PT

California Halts Death Penalty.

Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered a moratorium on all executions in California. Maintaining that innocent people have been sentenced to death, and the death penalty is unfair against people of color, Newsom put all executions on hold in California, state with the largest death row population in the Western Hemisphere. While conservatives decry the decision claiming it defies the voters will, civil rights advocates greet it as a historic step that may turn the tide for the abolition of the capital punishment. The former defense lawyer for a Mexican man who spent almost 25 years on death row before being exonerated and released, joins the conversation, as well as a family member of a crime victim, and a representative of a Republican lawmaker who shows disappointment and opposition to the executive order.

Guests: Cristina Bordé, Former Attorney for Vicente Benavides, Oakland, CA; (Audio Segment) Gov. Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, Sacramento, CA; Attorney Daisy Vieyra, ACLU, Sacramento, CA; Bryan Anguiano, Spokesperson, Assemblyman Tom Lackey, Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee, Palmdale, CA; Deldelp Medina, member, California Crime Victims for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, San Francisco, CA.
