Police Killing of Zapotec Teen; Police Reform.
Police officers in Salinas, CA, shot and killed a farm-working teenager in Salinas when he was brandishing a toy gun in his home. Before the shooting, cops had shouted commands in Spanish. But the young man spoke only Zapotec, a Mexican indigenous language. Community advocates decry the lack of police training to communicate with indigenous migrants and demand an independent review of local police practices, including de-escalation techniques and racial profiling. A local advocate reports on the grief-stricken family and discusses the petitions of a coalition of Mexican indigenous groups. On a related story, a community radio journalist explains the content of a package of police reform laws that just went into effect in the state of Washington. The new state laws considered the most ambitious police reform legislation in the country, passed after the public outcry over the killing of farmworker and mental health patient Antonio Zambrano in Pasco and after nationwide racial justice protests over the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
