PROGRAM # 8737 12:00 PM PT

Post-Election Wrap Up.

Latinos and other candidates of color made significant gains in races from Tucson to Boston and Redding, PA in last week’s polls. In Virginia, Democrats won big, taking control of the legislature for the first time in decades with the help of Latino voters. On the other hand, in Washington state, a ballot measure seeking to amend a law that banned affirmative action lost by a small margin. What do the results in Virginia mean for 2020? A trailblazing Latina legislator gives her perspective. And what does the vote in Washington mean for states like California, where there are plans to restart the debate on the ban against affirmative action? An expert on civil rights answers this question.

Guests: Elizabeth Guzman, Delegate, Virginia House of Delegates, Richmond, VA; Lizet Ocampo, Political Director, People For the American Way – PFAW, Washington, DC; Attorney David Morales, Former Member, Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs – Yakima Valley Region, Yakima, WA.

Mexico condemns coup in Bolivia. While in Bolivia an opposition senator proclaims herself president and a military officer puts the presidential sash on her, Mexico grants political asylum to the ousted president Evo Morales, whom Mexico recognizes as legitimate president and target of a coup d’etat. Mexico will request an urgent meeting of the OAS.

Guests: (audio segments) Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico, Mexico City; Jeanine Añez, Senator, Self-declared president of Bolivia, La Paz, Bolivia.
