PROGRAM # 9905 12:00 PM PT

The Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty at 175.

Pages of the original Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a document that transformed the US Southwest and the world, arrive in Denver today and are on display to mark the 175th anniversary of its signing. The treaty officially ended the U.S.-Mexico War, greatly expanded the US territory and changed the lives of Mexicans north of the Rio Grande forever. As Chicanos and Latinos become a majority in the US Southwest, community leaders and intellectuals deem the treaty a living document and are calling on the United Nations to investigate the state of human and land rights in Mexican communities north of the border, and reopen the discussion on the failed promises made.

Guests: Armando Rendón, Author of the Book “Chicano Manifesto” (1971), Editor of Somos en Escrito Press/Magazine, Berkeley, CA; Others TBA.
