PROGRAM # 8600 12:00 PM PT
Did Cinco de Mayo Save the Union?
On the anniversary of the Battle of Cinco de Mayo, this program features remarks from a Mexican scholar, quotes from historians, and music from the period of the French occupation. At a time when the threat of foreign intervention in internal affairs is in the news, an eminent historian reflects on the lessons learned from the successful Mexican guerrilla resistance against the invasion by the French empire. Also, according to a Mexican thinker, with the defeat of the French in the Battle of Puebla, General Zaragoza defended Mexico’s integrity and also saved the US from secession. Cinco de Mayo stopped the French from helping General Lee and his confederate army win the Civil War.
Guest: (Fragment of Speech) Dr. Patricia Galeana, Historian, Professor, UNAM, Writer, Mexico City; (Audio Segment) Dr. David Ayón, Academic Researcher, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA.
