A leader of community police in the mountains of Guerrero says the former governor of the state, Ángel Aguirre, tried to control the community police with money and was able to co-opt some, who accepted government funds and even made pacts with criminal groups. Those who refused were accused of crimes and are in prison, he says. Today, in regional public assemblies, people in towns in the mountains and the Costa Chica regions are electing new leaders, who will have as a priority to maintain safety in communities, strengthen the justice system, and fight for the freedom of imprisoned leaders.
