President López Obrador appointed two former governors from the party that ruled Mexico for decades as consuls of Mexico. The nominations have sparked pointed questions from career diplomats and anti-corruption activists, in reference to the corruption scandals surrounding one of the politicians-turned-diplomats. In another story, Mexican journalists staged a series of uncprecedented rallies across the country protesting impunity and calling for justice, after Lourdes Maldonado was assasinated in the border citybof Tijuana, becoming the third journalist killed this month and the 28th during this administration. Finally, Xiomara Casdtro was sworn in as the first woman president in Honduras, vowing to crackdown against corruption and promising free electricity for those living in extreme poverty. US Vicepresident Kamala Harris attended the inauguration ceremony at the national stadium.
