As the year comes to a close, journalists look back into events that left an indelible mark in Latino communities and talk about developments that will gain headlines in 2022. Amid a turbulent ending to the 2020 election, a new administration took office with promises of vaccines for all and full recovery from the crisis for all essential workers, including undocumented immigrants. Also, as US democratic institutions are under threat, some state governments respond by removing barriers for voters, while others rush to impose new restrictions. And climate change brought extreme weather events, from deadly heat waves in the Pacific Northwest and record-breaking wildfires in California to an unprecedented deep freeze in Texas. Mexico also struggled to control the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing crisis, and to deal with a Haitian and Central American migrant crisis in its Southern border.
