Elsa Mejia took office as a council member in Madera, making history as the first indigenous Mexican migrant to be elected to the city council in this city in California’s San Joaquin Valley. She talks about the key to her victory after running as an independent, her vision and priorities, and the work ahead to represent the youth and indigenous migrants who face language barriers. An academic analyst and activist puts this milestone in perspective and discusses the challenges ahead. This program also includes a report on President Lopez Obrador message to a full Zocalo three years after his inauguration. In selected excerpts, he ponders his efforts to increase employment, raise the mimum wage, follow a new approach to crime and violence and erradicate corruption. He also talks about his opposition to transgenic corn, fracking, mining licenses, toxic dumpsites, and deforestation.
