FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5
PROGRAM # 9433 12:00 PM PDT
Mexico Edition.
On the 150th anniversary of the massacre of 18 Chinese immigrants, Los Angeles became the largest city to apologize for past atrocities against Chinese residents. In Mexico, President Lopez Obrador recently apologized for the massacre in 1911 of more than 300 Chinese in Torreon, in northern Mexico, many of whom had fled violence in California. Researchers talk about this silenced history of anti Chinese hate in the face of the recent surge of Covid-related violence against Asians. The program includes a dramatic speech by a Chinese-Mexican entrepreneur and diplomat who offered the official statement of apology to the Chinese community on behalf of the Mexican government.
