Gen. Cienfuegos Now a Free Man. Mexican investigative journalist and author Anabel Hernández, known for her books on Mexican drug cartels and exposes on Mexico’s corruption, comments on the recent dropping of charges in the US, release and return to Mexico of Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos, former Mexican defense chief. She anticipates Cienfuegos will remain a free man and will not be prosecuted in Mexico and believes the release of the drug-trafficking suspect was due to pressure from the high command of the Mexican Army and the “exchange of political favors” with the US. She explores the short and long-term repercussions of this diplomatic move.

Co-Founder of Mexico’s “Self-Defense” Movement Dies. Dr. Manuel Mireles, former top leader of a civilian militia network that rose up in arms in 2013to fight against drug cartels in Western Mexico, died a week ago. A friend, relative and supporter of Dr. Mireles recollects how he learned about the civilian uprising and the impact that community radio in California had on catapulting the story to Mexican media’s spotlight and getting Mexican authorities to intervene. This program includes a segment of one of the first interviews on Línea Abierta with Dr. Mireles.
