This program rerun features an interview with the legendary Mexican singer, composer, and actor Oscar Chavez, one of the foremost promoters of the Latin American new and folk song throughout the continent. Chávez died earlier this year at 85 of complications from Covid-19. In this interview originally aired twenty years ago, he talked about his beginnings as an artist in Mexico City, his role in promoting the new song and folk song movement in Latin America, his opinion about censorship, his wait-and-see position on the new governments in Mexico and Chiapas, his distinctive series of political parodies and his new album “Chiapas.”
