FRIDAY, MARCH 20
PROGRAM # 8835 12:00 PM PT
Mexico Edition.
Almost three months into the world coronavirus pandemic, and after the first death in Mexico, the government decided to suspend mass gatherings and classes in all schools, thereby giving a warning signal to society. Although health authorities assure that in the country there are no cases of local contagion and that the 164 patients infected with Covid-19 originated abroad, the country’s hospital network is preventively releasing beds and restricting routine consultations to be able to attend new cases of this viral contagion that shakes the world. In other news, in the midst of the health crisis, this weekend Baja Californians will vote in an informal public referendum to decide on the departure or permanence of the beer company Constellation Brands. The previous PAN government of Francisco Kiko de la Vega, granted this transnational company 20 million cubic meters of water a year, for 50 years. The transnational will consume 50 percent more water than the seven most important industrial companies in the city of Mexicali, which generate 10 times more employment than the thousand promised by the brewer. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts this broadcast from Mexico City.
Guests: (recorded interview) Martha Elvia García, legal spokesperson, Colectivo Plebiscito por el Agua de Baja California, Mexicali, Mexico; (audio segments) citizens polled about Mexico’s sanitary measures towards the coronavirus, Mexico City.
