PROGRAM # 8689 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

Today in the southern border of Mexico with Guatemala six thousand elements of the National Guard patrol the national southeast, including the coast and the roads that lead to Tapachula, Chiapas, where in previous months many undocumented people could receive refugee status or a 20-day permit to travel the country. According to media reports, more than 3,000 Africans have been stranded there since July and hundreds of them have held protests outside the 21st Century Migration Center. Likewise, the Fray Matias de Córdoba Human Rights Center reports that hundreds of Central Americans, in addition to Cubans and Haitians, are crammed into migrant stations, reports that a Haitian citizen died there and that other migrants are deported via fast-track. They also report that migrants are detained, locked in buses, without food and without being able to go to the bathroom, they are discouraged by telling them that the procedures for shelter and transit will be for several months. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts this program from Mexico City.
