PROGRAM # 8549 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

Tens of thousands of Maquiladora workers went on strike in the Mexican border city of Matamoros in recent days. In this program, analysts report on Mexico’s new minimum wage raise surrounding the labor unrest, and examine the constitutional reforms guaranteeing freedom of union association, and the sweetheart agreements between unions and employers called “protection contracts.” On other story: after the López Obrador administration announced deep cuts to the Tres por Uno program, the partnership that lets Mexican emigre associations leverage government funds to invest in their hometowns, emigre leaders debate the future of that program. They coincide in pointing that the program has become contaminated by corruption and political manipulation and that it needs new rules that ensure full transparency and accountability.
