PROGRAM # 8514 12:00 PM PT
Mexico Edition.
Without environmental impact studies and without asking the indigenous peoples for their consent on the construction of the so-called Mayan Train, the government of president López Obrador began last month the work on this railway project that will connect the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. To do this, it will have to cross the jungle of the state of Chiapas. According to the Mexican president, the train will bring employment and development to the Mexican southeast. However, environmentalists, scientists and community leaders declare themselves on a state of alert. They say that the laying of more than 1500 kilometers of railroad lines will affect the Calakmulk Biosphere, in Campeche, and seems to be part of the Puebla Panama Plan, promoted by former conservative President Vicente Fox. In this edition, the researcher Cristina Barros offers a wide view on the environmental and social effects of the so-called Mayan Train. Martha Elena Ramírez, hosts this broadcast of the Voz Pública program, from Mexico City.
Guest: (recording) Cristina Barros Valero, researcher of Mexican cuisine, history and popular culture. She is also a social activist, defender of native corn and the quality of urban life. She has a degree in Spanish Language and Literature and a Master of Arts at the UNAM. Mexico City.
