PROGRAM # 8440 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the students’ massacre on October 2, 1968. In public squares and official buildings the national flag is flying at half-mast. And on the walls of honor of the legislative chambers, the legend: “To the student movement of 1968” is inscribed with golden letters. No one has been punished for the tragic facts. Today it is known that snipers from the Estado Mayor Presidencial (a military presidential guard) fired shots at the university students and that Mexican Army battalions also fired on the demonstrators gathered in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, in Mexico City. The survivors are asking the incoming administration to reopen the investigation of the massacre, which left 54 orders of apprehension without executing. Martha Elena Ramírez hosts this broadcast, of the Voz Pública program, from Mexico City.

Guests: (audio segments) Félix Hernández Gamundi, member of the 1968 Consejo Nacional de Huelga; María de la Luz Aguilar Terrés; Karina, protester; Víctor Guerra, lawyer for Comité 68, Mexico City.
