PROGRAM # 7985 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

After 30 years of commercial pacts with its northern neighbor, another economic debacle comes to Mexico, with its public debt exceeding 50 percent of its GDP. Previous Mexican governments dismantled the manufacturing industry and handed over to foreign corporations the oil reserves that gave the country resources for more than one trillion pesos a year. Furthermore, following NAFTA rules, transnational corporations never paid taxes to the Mexican government, and the situation can be the same for the oil companies that are about to enter the Gulf of Mexico. Now, according to experts, comes an economic stagnation and the only way out for Mexico is to recover control of its oil. Martha Elena Ramírez, hosts this broadcast of the program Voz Pública, from Mexico City.

Guests: (audios) Dr. Alberto Montoya Martín del Campo, Economist; Dr. Nicolás Domínguez Vergara, Researcher at the National Institute of Petroleum, Mexico.
